OvWil is the common name for a strange race of beat-like anthropods that lived on the Greater Continent in the time of the Mage Wars.

Physical Description

OvWils are small in stature, being at most around five foot high. Their heads are topped with small, twisted horns that look to be made of onyx or quartz, their bones having a similar appearance. They have very large eyes relative to their heads, with dark, leathery skin covered in fine, soft hair.

Historical accounts speak of them having goat legs or knees that bent backwards, however modern analysis of skelatal remains show that the had a bone structure very close to that of humans, differing mostly in their broader shoulders and more squat appearance.

History

Early History

The origins of the OvWils are not known. No records of them exist during the Age of Darkness, yet references to them from the earliest periods of the First Chaotic Period show that the population was widespread at this time.

Ancient wall frescos from early Greater Antiquity depict beings that might be OvWils. Some Scholars also claim that they are the Visseers mentioned in the Book of Lore. However, like many such subjects of the book, this identification is hotly debated.

There also exists very ancient statuary in M'KHara that bare strong resemblance to OvWils, but to date no skeletal remains have been found in that region.

Mage Wars

In the early First Chaotic Period, OvWils were widespread, thou sparse on the Greater Continent. They were preferred to live in mountainous regions and high cliffs, but were often at odds with Dragons, who inhabited the same regions. While humans often found ways to live in harmony with dragons, the OvWil could not, and many were driven out into the lowland regions.

Little is well understood about the OvWil of this time. It seems that while some made efforts to assimilate into human cultures, most could not. Surviving accounts indicate that the typical OvWil had a very difficult time relating to humans. While quick-witted and fierce in combat, the OvWil have had a challenging time with human falsehood. It is believed that they held a very literal interpretation of the world, while also placing a high value on individual perception. Some historians attribute this to their "seeing" capability, which required OvWil to focus very heavily in order to interpret their visions. It has been said that "If a human were to tell an OvWil that the sky is purple, the OvWil would assume that that must be how the human perceives it, and they would not try to correct that. Similarly, if a human were to tell an OvWil that the money in their purse belonged to the human, the OvWil would have little room for doubt."

For these reasons, the OvWil were largely enslaved by the Dynastic Period. They were taken on mostly for their seeing capability, with kings and generals everywhere priding them on their capacity to tell the future. They were also used as domestic servants, where their ability to understand and perform complex tasks was valued. They made extremely poor laborers, though, which often led executions where various slave holders attempted to employ them as such. This further thinned the population.

The Marcon Alliance was infamous for enjoying the OvWil as pets, quite literally treating the clearly sentient creatures like animals. Since the Marcons also kept human slaves, this is not a far stretch. But surviving records of the era mention how troops of OvWil would be lead about on leashes, and made to perform simple tricks or dances. Often, their vocal chords would be cut, to prevent them from speaking and breaking the illusion.

Sadly, the OvWil population owes it's continued existence heavily to the Marcons. The development of magic-tech Strawmen, which had become quite advanced by the mid Dynastic period, negated much of the need for flesh and blood slaves. Other cultures then slaughtered what OvWil they did not need as seers. Only the Marcons kept large numbers of OvWil, where they were actually "bread" like animals to produce specific desirable visual traits.

By the late Dynastic Period, "wild" OvWil were nearly gone, though populations of the "domestic" variety survived in the interior. When the Marcon Alliance fell, the remaining OvWil fled and headed north.

Later History and Extinction

Evidence indicates that OvWils were mostly slaughtered wholesale during the Second Chaotic Period as there percieved future-sight ability was thought to be more dangerous than useful. Persecution of isolated OvWil communities continued after the wars drew to a close, and by the mid Golden Age they are believed to have been fully extinct.

The Gudersnipe Foundation has in archives three well-preserved OvWil bodies; two ice mummies and one kept in preservatives. They further have over three hundred skeletons and a catalogue of some fifteen thousand artifacts.

Magical Capabilities

Ovwils are a species that have taken up residence in remote areas of the north. They prefer mountains and high cliffs. Generally hard to reach places. They are a tad alarming at first withcurled horns that look to be carved from stone, their smooth flat features and their large eyes. Not to mention the thin sparse fur that grows over much of their body. While they where originally thought by other races to be beasts they are a gentle species with deep spiritual beliefs and a power to look beyond our plane of existence. While their ancestors could see other planes as clear as your hand in front of you the modern Ovwils will see glimpses and hear widowed from these other planes of existence. This gives them an advantage to perception checks against most anything except for humans themselves.

The Ovwils try to keep away from Humans as they have a rather violent and deceptive nature. Ovwils are honest and have the inability to deceive others. This is why they are so trusting in the words of others and cannot tell if a human isn't telling the truth. They can sense a rock being thrown at them a second after its left the asailents hand but if a human says the sky is magenta well then clearly this human sees the sky as magenta and must be looked after due to its strange color vision.

While the Ovwils avoid violence at all cost they are trained to subdue both with staffs and rope as well as Magic.

I'll draw one up when I can. I imagine them kind of like Beast from beauty and the beast but not as animal and more human

Actually they're called Ovwils because when they originally came here they where referred to as off worlders. They came via magic not science. They where generally enslaved during the mate wars and seen as a hot comodity because even though their perceptive abilities have waited over the years they where thought to be able to see the future. Total bullshit but still. They're generally thought to be extinct after the magenwars but they're really just in hiding. I picked the giant cliffs on the north western area of the continent because I have this awesome idea for how they build settlements off the cliffs. They're hard to reach and kinda camoflauged.

The horns are giant but small wouldn't work for the design for the one I have in my head. His is like the gazelles with the twisted horns. They look like marble and Quartz though.

They're kind of like your version of Munks. Or airbenders lol since the age wars takes a major toll on their population.

Cileans librarian in her castle is a Ovwil named Sylus. He's everything you would want in a librarian and a companion. He also has an affinity for waistcoats
