The Mandalay Incident refers to a war game during which three members of the Eighth Power (Hunter Jusenkyou, Jason Bur'I, and Cindy Kyte), working with minimal prep-time and no logistical support, stole a fully-armed, super-heavy dreadnought, the C.B.S. Dianvi, operating out of the Mandalay Starbase, and used it to carry out a simulated attack run on the fourth planet in the nearby Mandalay System.

The mission was carried out under direct orders from Instructor Gailen, who intentionally failed to inform any of the Crimson Blade personnel stationed at the starbase or on the Dianvi. Another ship, C.B.S. Garruk, was preparing to make a suicide-run against the Dianvi when Hunter stood down and explained his actions. Though most details of the incident were never made public, the entire incident saw wide-spread media attention. Nearly everyone involved thought it was an actual terrorist attack.

Details

The Dianvi was in stardock at a Foundation out-base, with the crew taking liberty leave during a lengthy mission. Most of the soldiers were not sleeping onboard, so despite being at nearly one-hundred-percent combat-readiness, the Dianvi had less than 120 people on board (out of a crew of 5,000). The handful of crew members on board consisted almost entirely of security personnel, and minimal skeleton crews in main engineering and the bridge. The captain was absent.

The team that stole the Dianvi used a cobbled-together nuclear reactor to flood the ship with radiation, making the crew evacuate. They then took control of the ship from the bridge and carried out the mission, while other vessels in the vicintity did their best to stop them. Keep in mind that no one outside of Gailen and the three thieves knew this was just a drill. Only the Garruk was able to pursue.

The team then piloted the ship ten light years to the Mandalay system where they completed a simulated attack run, targetting dozens of cities on the heavily populated planet with N2 missiles that were not actually fired. Following the Garruk's attempt to ram, Hunter Jusenkyou laid down arms and surrendered the ship to the Crimson Blade, who briefly held him in custody while confirming his story with Gailen. Gailen was later publicly censured before the Blind Consul, though his reprimand was just for show.

Ultimately, the Gudersnipe Foundation released a statement to the effect that the team responsible were "in possession of highly-specialized knowledge of ship operations and procedures" and that no outside group should be able to replicate their success. The entire incident was largely covered up.

C.B.S. Dianvi

The Dianvi was a Salamander-class super-heavy dreadnought, twelve miles long, and equipped with twenty-seven guns, including a large, fixed-forward-facing main cannon that was among the most powerful carried by anything smaller than the Mercury-class of starship. It was also equipped with a second deck of missile banks, giving it twice as many tubes as a ship of similar size.

Mission Highlights

Hunter, Jason, and Cindy were given only two hours to prepare, and not allowed any specialized equipment but what they carried at the time. In addition, the command codes the team was known to possess were temporarily stricken form the record, effectively giving them no more access than any civilian. They did not have any support from the rest of the team.

Because so few personnel were on board the Dianvi, the bulk of the ship was on a very strict security lock-down. Access to any of the weapons systems, engines, or mostly anything sensitive was not possible. Routs were sealed by blast doors that could only be opened by a command-level authorization. The team was, however, able to access several "low-priority" storage lockers, including one containing parts for assembling Nuclear Two missiles, specifically hihgly-enriched uranium cores.

These cores were considered not dangerous because, without a trigger and proper detonators, they could not possibly be used to cause an atomic explosion. Those parts were stored in other areas, under tighter security, and the cores themselves(while inside storage bins) weighed several hundred pounds each. Stealing them would not be easy, and they were thought to be of little value without the other materials.

Hunter's team, however, had other plans. Wearing shock suits to protect themselves, they assembled several cores into a make-shift pile-type nuclear reactor, using materials scavenged from the hold and around the ship. Properly moderated, the reactor took several minites to reach critical mass, then several more to begin a complete melt-down. The Dianvi crew, lacking radiation suites themselves, and unaware of why there was suddenly a nuclear melt down happening in an out-of-the-way storage locker, wisely chose to abandon ship.

At that point, no one on board had any idea that this was an attack, and the best theory being proposed was that improperly-stored materials had somehow began a chain reaction. The crew chose to evacuate while a special team could be prepared on the station, or other actions taken. Meanwhile, Hunter and his team took control of the bridge, decompressed the rest of the ship, and broke it out of stardock.

Piloting a dreadnought at faster-than-light speeds is not a simple matter, a ship like the Dianvi normally required a total of twelve highly-trained personnel to complete the manuever. Hunter Jusenkyou stated in his after-action report that he and Jason were too busy attempting to remove the security lockouts on the weapon systems to assist, leaving Cindy to complete the entire maneuver herself, while still taking evasive action at sub light speeds. For her actions, Cindy would later recieve the Star Medal(the incident, while extremely embarassing to the Foundation, was still a complete success).

Pursuit by C.B.S. Garruk

The team was able to trigger a port lockdown while stealing the Dianvi, thus preventing any other ship currently in stardock from pursuing them. C.B.S. Garruk, however, had not yet docked. When the Dianvi made the jump to FTL, Garruk was able to follow in their wake. This somewhat complicated matters, as, for Hunter's team, successful completion of the mission hinged entirely on none of their weapon's systems being damaged, as they had neither the time nor the manpower to effect repairs on a ship that size.

To combat the issue, rather than fire upon Garruk, Cindy was able to drop the Dianvi out of FTL inside Mandalay IV's atmosphere, with their missile ports already open. Under Gailen's orders, the Dianvi had to reach orbit of Mandaly IV, open it's missile ports, and successfully lock onto and gain a shooting solution on at least twelve population centers on the planet surface, then hold for ten minutes(enough time to fire several thousand missiles).

The team successfully completed all of the mission parameters before Garruk could reach weapons' range
