The Gordian Maze is a temporal anomaly first charted by the Gudersnipe Foundation in 253 B.G.A.. Though it was studied for a considerable amount of time, the Foundation was never able to make sense of the anomaly, and eventually declared the entire region a one-hundred-thousand light-year "no-go" zone, effectively forming the border of Foundation space in that region.

The anomaly itself is very small, fitting a cube only fifty feet along an edge. It is found underground in a cave system, on the first planet in the solar system designated CRX 72. What the Foundation did discover is that time is bent in three distinct ways. This led to the allusion that "if you enter the Gordian Maze, you will enter it again in the future, and you must have been there in the past".

During the Course Books, Hunter uses the maze three times. The first time, he and several of the Slayer Dragons and Eighth Power become lost in the maze during an attempt to rescue Jason, and themselves have to be rescued by his daughter, Emily Jusenkyou, who enlists the aid of Ryoga. Initially, Jason Bur'I fears that by having entered the maze, they have damaged their own timeline ("you must have been there in the past").

However, Hunter later theorizes that the first entry is the "having been there in the past", and only means that to balance the anomaly, one must re-enter it two more times.

During The Trinity Alternative in The ByWay to Freedom, Hunter uses the anomaly to retrieve Echbalder by simply entering it, finding his past self, and using the gateway sword to retrieve the original.
