The death system revolves around the concept of phylacteries(or "soul-hidy places"). Basically, each character has two phylactery that can be used in resurrection in the event of a character's untimely demise. Death in Mage Wars has two modes: dead and destroyed. The difference is very important, as "dead" means the character is only dead and the body remains and can be brought back to life. "Destroyed" implies that the body is somehow destroyed, and more powerful magics will be required to restore them.

Dead

When a character's hit-points reach 0, they are considered dead. A player who is simply dead will be free to roam about as a ghost. They can not attack, cast spells, or use abilities(except when those abilities specifically state that they can be used while dead), or otherwise interact with the physical world(pull levers, open doors, etc).

If a player dies within a dungeon, they are free to move throughout the dungeon except through barriers that would prevent passage to the living. They cannot set off traps or otherwise effect the dungeon.

A raise-dead spell or effect returns a dead character to life. They can also be brought back to life at a sacred spring if another player uses a special item(or if they have a different item in their inventory). If the character is brought back at a sacrid spring they appear at the spring. If they are brought back with a spell they appear at their body.

Dead Item Damage

When a character dies, all equipped armor takes 5% of maximum durability damage(Ex: an item has 100 max durability, but has already been damaged down to 80, the character dies, the item takes 5 points damage). Weapons suffer 10%.

Destroyed

A body becomes "destroyed" when the character is killed in such a way that the body would be severely damaged, such as falling into molten lava or being crushed by a giant rock. Several spells and weapons also have "destroy" effects. When a character's body is destroyed, they may still move around freely as a ghost, but it takes much more powerful magic to restore them to life.

Phylactery

The character's phylactery is an item that can be used to resurrect him from any death mode at all. Each character has two, one stored at Sun's Beacon and the other that the player can place wherever they choose. The second phylactery can be moved around, but must be installed in a special shrine in order to function. This can be at a temple in a city, in guild halls or skyships, even in some wilderness locations.

The phylactery is related to Necromancy and will receive additional updates with the necromancer source book. In-game, the necromancers(already in existence, not playable) are responsible for restoring life in the event of the inevitable.
